Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Worries

Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or prison.

Platform Response and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the service has removed problematic content and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with numerous of members, filled with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these communities, messages display dark colored packages with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it regularly moderated harmful material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
