This winter recruitment period is typically a period of intense rumour and possible big-money deals. A number of notable players find themselves connected to transfers away from their present clubs. We examine a selection of the major names who might be changing clubs in January.

Antoine Semenyo

Despite Ghana's failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, which has kept the player available, indications are a significant transfer is imminent. The 25-year-old has a contract with a substantial release clause applicable for a short period at the start of the month. Recent developments suggest the Premier League champions are now the frontrunners for his services. Other suitors like Tottenham and Chelsea reportedly have moved on to other options, leaving teams such as Manchester United or Liverpool to make a last-minute move.

Marc Guéhi

This England defender has excel for Crystal Palace this season a summer transfer to Liverpool falling through. This Portugal midfielder might be set for a return to the Premier League after a spell in the Saudi Pro League. Still just twenty-eight, while his contract ending in the summer, he represents a potential bargain. Teams such as Manchester United and Liverpool have been linked with the player. Furthermore, there have been suggestions from Spain that he would be prepared to take a pay cut for a move to Real Madrid.

M. ter Stegen

This veteran Germany goalkeeper finds himself as third-choice at Barcelona under the manager Flick. Having lost his place and undergone an operation, a January exit looks highly probable. Villa were once mentioned as a potential suitor, but that option now appears unlikely. Instead, interest from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are reportedly showing interest in the keeper.

Ivan Toney

This prolific England centre-forward has kept scoring frequently in the Middle East. Coming back to the Premier League could enhance his dwindling hopes of being in the England World Cup. However, securing a transfer presents significant challenges. His current club do not wish to sell him, and his alleged huge weekly wages make any agreement difficult. As his current deal nearing its end, many English sides – including Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool – are monitoring the situation. Juventus are desperate to secure the youngster to a lengthy contract but face a race to keep one of Europe's brightest prospects.

K. Smit

This much-admired Dutch midfielder has drawn comparisons to Kevin De Bruyne for his playing style. Following starring at the Under-19 European Championship, he has broken into the AZ side. The 19-year-old is widely expected to complete a big-money move in January. Newcastle United are believed to be frontrunners, but could face stiff competition from Real Madrid for a signing priced at approximately £22 million.
