A minimum of thirteen people perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
